Our Need for Support

Thank you for visiting the #iGiveCatholic page for St. Joseph’s Abbey and Seminary College. Please take a moment to read about our two specific needs in the event that you wish to earmark your generous donations to our organization. For this year's #iGiveCatholic campaign, we are highlighting two separate needs - one within Saint Joseph Abbey, the second within Saint Joseph Seminary College.

Saint Joseph Abbey is humbly asking for your financial support of the Saint Benedict Appeal. This appeal aims to help provide ongoing quality health care and in-home supportive care enabling our older monks to be at home among the family and community they dedicated their lives to. Your generosity will help us continue to provide a comfortable home, accessible and adequate accommodations, appropriate equipment, caring sitters, professional health care, and health insurance. As many members of our community reach sixty, seventy, and even eighty, we are pressed to ensure our older monks receive quality, twenty-four-hour a day care, seven days a week. Your unwavering investment in our monastic community will ensure this season and the final days for our senior monks are a peaceful transition to eternal life with God our Father.

To allocate your donation to the continuation of the Saint Benedict Appeal, please choose the designation "Saint Joseph Abbey" when submitting your donation.

Saint Joseph Seminary College humbly asks for your financial support of the Saint Joseph Seminary College Gymnasium Phase II Renovation, which aims to give our seminarians an opportunity to participate in improving their physical health and wellness activities by contributing to Phase II of the gymnasium upgrades. With your financial support, we can give the seminarians the tools they need to experience well-being, athleticism and team activities that engender a willingness and ability to develop discipline during their years of preparation. This second phase will focus on purchasing updated equipment for the gymnasium and for wellness activities.

To allocate your donation to the Seminary College's need, please choose the designation "Saint Joseph Seminary" when submitting your donation.

About our Ministries

Saint Joseph Abbey is a Benedictine community of monks located on 1,100 acres of beautiful pine forests in Saint Benedict, Louisiana. Over the past century, the Abbey has been an abiding spiritual presence in the Gulf South and has left an indelible mark on local and regional history. Saint Joseph Abbey has educated many of the region's civic and religious leaders, and it has founded and staffed numerous parishes in the New Orleans and Northshore areas. It has also had a significant impact on area culture by sponsoring and promoting programs in both liturgical and secular arts. Saint Joseph Abbey’s monks have remained faithful to prayer, work, and the monastic way of life. The Saint Joseph Abbey monks serve the community through the various apostolates, which help to fund the Abbey and the monastic lifestyle they have vowed to live.

Saint Joseph Abbey is a member of the Swiss-American Congregation of the Order of Saint Benedict, a network of autonomous, Roman Catholic monasteries in the United States, Canada, and Central America. Currently, the Right Reverend Justin Brown, O.S.B., former abbot of Saint Joseph Abbey, is the congregation’s Abbot President.

The monks of Saint Joseph Abbey live according to the Rule of Saint Benedict. Written in the 6th century by Benedict of Nursia as a guide to monastic life, it provides teaching about the basic monastic virtues of humility, silence, and obedience as well as directives for daily living. The Rule prescribes times for common prayer, meditative reading, and manual work; it legislates for the details of common living such as clothing, sleeping arrangements, food and drink, care of the sick, reception of guests, recruitment of new members, journeys away from the monastery, and more. While the Rule does not shun minute instructions, it allows the Abbot to determine the particulars of common living according to his wise discretion. The monks of Saint Joseph Abbey serve in many local apostolates, including Abbey Bread, Abbey Cemetery & Caskets, Abbey Gift Shop, Abbee Honey, MonkSoap, MonkSweets, the Retreat Center, and Saint Joseph Seminary College.
