Since 1982, the people of New Orleans have benefitted from the love and support of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Cabrini Sisters), beginning with an orphanage personally established that year by St. Frances Cabrini on St. Philip Street in the French Quarter. By 1905, the orphanage had grown, and a new building was constructed and dedicated as the Sacred Heart Orphan Asylum located at 3400 Esplanade Avenue. By 1959, the orphanage was rededicated, and additional classrooms, a gym, and a cafeteria were constructed, facing Bayou St. John, currently located at 1400 Moss Street. Today, the entire complex is known as Cabrini High School in New Orleans.
The Cabrini Sisters are a worldwide order founded by Francesca Cabrini, the first American saint. Cabrini only lived 67 years (1850-1917); at the age of 30, she convinced the Pope to approve the first female missionary religious order; within 37 years, she established 67 schools, hospitals, orphanages, and clinics on 6 continents. The Cabrini women of New Orleans are extremely proud to be a part of this international legacy and heritage.
Today, the mission of Cabrini High School is to educate the minds and hearts of young women in the Catholic Cabrinian tradition, which strives to instill the core values of respect, excellence, and service. Students are encouraged to be proud of their ancestry and citizenship, to be grateful for their education and simple luxuries, and to be sympathetic to those less fortunate. They are taught to strive for academic excellence as they learn and grow in a personal atmosphere where each young woman has the full commitment of her teachers to help her find her unique passion and to achieve God's call upon her life.
