Compassion in Action: Seeing the Face of Jesus in all we Serve

Earlier this year, a group of volunteers gathered at our Helping Hands of St. Louis Soup Kitchen to serve meals to those in need. Before they began, they paused to pray: “Lord, thank you for this time to serve your people. May we see the face of Jesus in all who come here today.”

The guests arrived. Some familiar faces, alongside new ones. The young, the old. Some smiling, others carrying the weight of their problems. As the volunteers scooped food onto trays, one man stopped the line. “Look at me,” he said. The room quieted. 

“Do you know what I see?” he asked. The volunteers exchanged glances, unsure of what to say. Finally, someone replied, “No, what?”

The man’s face lit up with a joyful smile. “I see the face of Jesus!”

A simple meal, a simple prayer — yet in that moment, God’s presence was undeniable.
