The Diaconate is a sacred vocation of service in the Church, a living witness to Christ the Servant. In the Acts of the Apostles, we witness the Church responding to the needs of the community by appointing seven men filled with the Spirit and wisdom to serve at table and ensure the equitable distribution of resources. These first deacons were not only administrators of charity but also men of deep faith and evangelizing spirit. In them, the Church saw an icon of Christ who came not to be served, but to serve.
Today Permanent Deacons assist at the altar, proclaim the Gospel, preach, and minister in works of charity, bringing the presence of Christ to those in need throughout West Tennessee.
The Diocese of Memphis currently has over 70 Permanent Deacons who serve in parishes, hospitals, prisons, and outreach ministries across our diocese. The Diocese recently celebrated the joyful ordination of 20 new Deacons. Their ordination is a testament to the fruit of prayer, formation, and discernment that shapes each man’s journey toward ordained ministry.
The Permanent Diaconate continues to be a vibrant and growing ministry within the Church. Since 1978, the Diocese of Memphis has been blessed by the generous service of deacons and their families - men who have responded with humility and joy to the call of Christ the Servant. Your support is needed to help continue the formation of the Deacons. With your help the Diocese can offer workshops, classes and ongoing formation so that the Deacons can better serve the faithful in West Tennessee.
Your prayers and support help make this ministry possible, forming servant-leaders rooted in faith, charity, and love for the people of God.
