Holy Family Catholic Church and School, nestled in the heart of Ashland, Kentucky, stands as a enduring beacon of faith and community, its roots tracing back to the mid-19th century amid the industrial stirrings of the Ohio River Valley. Founded in 1860, the parish emerged from the generosity of the Kentucky Iron, Coal & Manufacturing Company, which deeded a prime lot on what would become Holy Family Square to the fledgling Roman Catholic congregation. Tasked with erecting a brick church and school within three years, the determined Catholics fulfilled the challenge, constructing the school in 1863. Initially staffed by lay teachers, it welcomed the Sisters of St. Francis from Rochester, Minnesota, in 1877, infusing the classrooms with Franciscan zeal that would define generations of learning until the Sisters of Divine Providence assumed stewardship in 1948.
From these humble origins, Holy Family blossomed into a vital sanctuary for spiritual nourishment and temporal support. The church, a unique edifice at 900 Winchester Avenue, has administered countless sacraments—baptisms, weddings, and funerals—binding families across Ashland's diverse tapestry. The history here is deep, going back to 1858 with the first Irish Benedictines who celebrated Mass and cared for its members on this very same plot of land. The Very Reverend D. Andrew Canon Garner, KHS, a robust Knights of Columbus Council, an outstanding Hospitality Committee, and a generous team of lay ministers lead our parish members in the continued proclamation of the Kingdom.
Complementing the spiritual life, Holy Family School has long been a cornerstone of holistic education, serving grades K-12 with a curriculum rooted in Gospel values. Today, with Holy Family Collegiate High School, it emphasizes academic rigor alongside moral formation, fostering scholars who excel in STEM, arts, and athletics—boasting a long basketball history and a top 25 ranking among Kentucky's Catholic schools. Beyond its walls, the parish extends compassion through food pantries, cultural events, and outreach to the needy, embodying Pope Leo's call to mercy in the surrounding Appalachian communities.
For over 160 years, Holy Family has weathered economic shifts, societal upheavals, and personal trials, remaining a steadfast companion. In an era of fleeting connections, it offers enduring solace: a place where souls are fed, minds are sharpened, and neighbors become family. As Ashland evolves, so does Holy Family—innovative yet anchored in its founding charism—ensuring the light of Christ illuminates the Tri-State region's spiritual and practical horizons.
