Parroquia La Resurrección del Señor

The Resurrection of the Lord Parish was created by Bishop Ulises A. Casiano Vargas on October 16, 1988.

It is segregated from the Parish-Cathedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria of the city of Mayagüez.

It has been constituted by the following communities around already existing chapels: Immaculate Heart of Mary, in the La Quinta neighborhood of Mayagüez, seat of the new parish and under the title of “The Resurrection of the Lord”. Nuestra Señora del Carmen Chapel in the Quemado neighborhood. This chapel is the second oldest in this city. It was founded in 1921, given its state of deterioration and with the efforts and dedication of Don Miguel Perez, another chapel was built next to the place and blessed in 1987, Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Chapel in the Rio Cañas neighborhood, founded in 1970, and Cristo Redentor Chapel in the Consumo neighborhood, founded in 1987.

The Bishop entrusted the pastoral care to the Carmelite Fathers, naming Father Rogelio Mur as the first pastor, with whom Father Luis Miranda shared the work, and two years later Father Francisco Ortíz.

There was no parish house. These first priests set up a small wooden house on the property. Given the first economic difficulties of the new parish, some families agreed to supply them with food on a daily basis to cover this need.

Work began on the community integration of the new parish: adult catechesis; formation weeks; missions in different communities; activities such as the “Sung Rosary”; we participated with a float in the Good Friday procession in the Cathedral; we received the Centennial Cross. The tabernacle was permanently established in the Consumo chapel, to the joy of the neighbors.

A very special emphasis is given to the celebration of the octave of Easter, the Easter Vigil of the parish, which culminates with the “Family Day”.
