Innovation Within Tradition: Cultivating the Catholic Imagination

At Saint Michael Catholic School, we believe the Catholic imagination inspires students to see the world not simply as it is, but as it could be.

For more than 25 years, our school has been forming students in faith, knowledge, and virtue. Now, we are taking the next step—transforming our traditional library into a dynamic Innovation Lab where faith and learning come together through creativity, collaboration, inquiry, and discovery.

Our current library has served generations of students well, but today’s learners need more than rows of books and fixed tables. They need spaces where they can question, build, experiment, collaborate, solve problems, and create.

From Library to Launchpad

The Innovation Lab will become a schoolwide hub for learning, serving students from PreK3 through Grade 8.

With flexible furniture and adaptable learning zones, students will be able to move seamlessly from:

Reading → Research → Designing → Building → Creating → Collaborating → Discovering

The space will support:

• 🔬 Hands-on STEM and science investigations

• 🤖 Robotics and engineering challenges

• 💻 Coding and technology integration

• 📚 Literacy and research-based inquiry

• ➗ Mathematical problem-solving

• 🎨 Creativity and interdisciplinary projects

• 🤝 Collaborative and project-based learning

This is not simply about giving students a new space. It is about giving teachers the environment they need to teach differently—and giving students the opportunity to learn differently.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Over the past three years, Saint Michael Catholic School has intentionally invested in transforming teaching and learning as we work toward Cognia STEM Certification, anticipated in October 2026.

Our faculty have engaged in professional learning focused on STEM integration, inquiry-based instruction, interdisciplinary curriculum, and student-centered learning. Donors and community partners have already helped transform the physical space through improvements to lighting, flooring, windows, paint, and instructional technology.

Now, we need your help to complete the vision.

The Missing Piece: Flexible Learning Furniture

The final—and most important—piece is furniture designed for innovation.

These furnishings will allow teachers to transform the room throughout the day—from a whole-group lesson to small-group intervention, from a STEM design challenge to independent reading, and from collaborative research to hands-on exploration.

Why It Matters

Since the beginning of this initiative three years ago, our MAP Growth data shows areas of improving achievement and growth, particularly in reading and mathematics in upper elementary and middle school.

The Innovation Lab will give our teachers another powerful tool to address these needs through flexible grouping, differentiated instruction, collaboration, inquiry, and hands-on learning.

We will measure our progress through student growth, engagement, classroom performance, and STEM learning outcomes.

But the impact goes beyond test scores.

We want our students to become young people who can think critically, communicate clearly, collaborate generously, create courageously, and seek truth, goodness, and beauty. That is the Catholic imagination.
