“With zeal I am zealous for the Lord God of hosts.”

1 Kings 19:10

Since the opening of our mission in Timor-Leste on July 18, 2013, the Sisters of Mount Carmel have served the people of Timor-Leste in the fields of education, health care, and parish ministries. They have outgrown the one classroom building in Zumalai and, with the help of our sisters in the Philippine Region, 2024, we dedicated the new buildings, Pre Escolar do Monte Carmelo, Convent and a dormitory for high school girls in Zumalai. The school has grown to 56 students with three sisters and two lay faculty.

This year our #iGiveCatholic fundraising will help us provide students and teachers with instructional materials and supplies, water dispensers for the children, monthly birthday celebrations, tuition scholarships, as well as to continue with our daily feeding program for the preschoolers. These children are poor and underprivileged and oftentimes they get their balanced and nutritional meal from the school.

Most of us have experienced having a birthday cake on our birthday. This is not true in Timor-Leste. Each month the school celebrates the birthdays of all the students born that month and gives them the experience of having a birthday cake. Therefore, additionally, we are requesting funds to provide for these monthly celebrations.

During these past ten years your donations and prayers have helped us continue to be “zealous for the Lord God of hosts,” as our Carmelite motto states. We are most appreciative of your prayers and financial assistance in supporting our missionary efforts in Timor-Leste.

Advanced giving for 2025 is from November 17 – December 2, the day of giving.

May Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, protect you and assist you in all your endeavors.

God bless you for your continued support of the mission of the Sisters of Mount Carmel.

Who We Are

The early history of the Sisters of Mount Carmel is rooted in the story of a remarkable woman’s journey, Julie Thérèse Chevrel, who was blessed with an unswerving sense of God’s call. The Sisters of Mount Carmel was founded on November 2, 1833 when Sister Thérèse Chevrel and Sister St. Augustin Clerc arrived in New Orleans aboard the Steamship Olympia from France. The early history of the Sisters of Mount Carmel is characterized by their response to the needs of their times and to requests of the local church. True to the spirit of Julie Thérèse Chevrel, the Sisters of Mount Carmel today strive to be faithful to God’s call in the reality of changing circumstances and to be responsive to the needs of the local church. Whether it be in the bayou country of South Louisiana, in the heart of New Orleans, in the villages of the poor in the Philippines and Timor-Leste, or in a Carmelite office in Illinois, our thrust remains the same: to lovingly serve God’s people, responding to the needs of the time, taking Mary… in her simplicity, zeal and humility… as our model. Our service to the church is nourished by our prayer life, communal living and commitment to bring Christ to the world.
