SSVP OMAHA PROGRAMS AND MINISTRIES
Homelessness Prevention: Keeping Families Together & Housed - Every day, local families face sudden financial crises - the loss of a loved one, an unexpected job loss, a medical emergency - that threaten their ability to stay in their homes. When that moment comes, our Vincentian volunteers and staff step in quickly, providing urgent support to keep families safe and stable. Through rental assistance, utility payments, and help with other critical bills, we prevent the devastating spiral of homelessness before it begins. Last year alone, the Society invested over $2 million to help neighbors remain in their homes with lights on and heat and water running. The truth is simple: preventing homelessness is not only more humane, it's far more effective than trying to rebuild lives after stability is lost.
Food Pantry - The Society's large downtown client-choice Food Pantry - along with the food pantries at a number of our SSVP parish sites - are crucial in helping feed struggling Omaha neighbors in need, serving 39,762 families & individuals last year. The Society's main Food Pantry, located at 2101 Leavenworth Street, provides non-perishable food, fresh and frozen produce, bread, dairy, and proteins, with our volunteer “Companions” escorting neighbors through the pantry, ensuring they are able to obtain the food they need to feed their families.
Sack Lunch Program for the Homeless and Near-Homeless - Each weekday, SSVP Omaha volunteers prepare and distribute up to 350 sack lunches to neighbors experiencing homelessness in downtown Omaha, as well as to elderly individuals living in low-income "senior" living housing in eastern areas of the city. Provided free of charge - out of the Society's Holy Family Center at 1715 Izard Street - to many, this is the only full meal they may receive on any given day. Last year, SSVP Omaha served 58,344 meals to our neighbors in need.
"Closet Door" Clothing & Necessities for the Homeless - Every weekday, SSVP Omaha volunteers and staff distribute a large variety of clothing and personal care items to homeless neighbors out of our Holy Family Center's "Closet Door". Items include essentials like socks, underwear, jeans, sweatshirts, shoes and boots, as well as seasonal items such as coats, hats and gloves. Personal care supplies include toiletries of all types, along with sleeping bags, blankets, duffle bags/backpacks. Last year, we provided 11,907 clothing items.
Homeless Outreach - SSVP Omaha provides compassionate, year-round street outreach to neighbors experiencing homelessness and living outdoors, delivering much-needed, essential items including sack lunches, water, blankets, ice, and fuel, among others. We also host special gatherings throughout the year, including holiday meals and summer barbecues, while connecting neighbors to medical care, housing, and other vital resources. Last year, 6,000+ survival items were distributed through SSVP Omaha's Street Outreach Program.
Winter Coat Giveaways - The Society provides two winter coat and accessories giveaway events, annually, benefitting struggling families in the Omaha community. Last year, SSVP Omaha provided 5,346 winter coats and apparel to neighbors in need.
Disaster Case Management - As a member of the Tri-County Long Term Recovery Group, SSVP Omaha assists families impacted by disasters in Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington Counties. Our Certified Disaster Case Managers guide families through recovery, often for over a year, providing financial assistance, food, clothing, furniture and household items. Last year, SSVP Omaha provided 2,727 hours of case management to victims of natural disaster.
Thrift Stores - Our SSVP Omaha thrift stores offer deeply discounted clothing, furniture, mattresses and other household items, helping families stretch limited budgets. We also provide vouchers to families in financial crisis, allowing them to obtain items free of charge, as well as partner with other local agencies to distribute essential items at no cost. Last year, SSVP Omaha provided $39,304 worth of clothing & furniture to neighbors in need.
