St. John the Baptist Church is known throughout New Orleans as the Church with the Golden Steeple.  It is a popular destination for weekend Mass and a favorite of brides, thanks to an unusually long center aisle and magnificent stained-glass windows. Unfortunately, the windows' lead borders are deteriorating and are in need of immediate repair to preserve their beauty for the generations to come. Funds raised through the 2025 IgiveCatholic campaign will be used for this vital project.

Who We Are

Built in the mid 1800's, St. John the Baptist Church is a registered New Orleans Historic Landmark. The stained-glass panels are know by aficionados throughout the world as among the most exquisite in the western hemisphere. The Church was built for Irish immigrants and designed by New Orleans Architect, Albert Diettel, whose inspiration was an onion-domes cathedral in Dresden, Germany.  The cost of the building exceeded the congregation's resources, so it was not until the 1880's that the interior was completed and the enormous stained-glass windows, made in the Munich studios of Franz Mayer and F.X. Zettler, were installed.
