St. Mary’s Legacy Clinic’s (SMLC) mission is to continue the legacy of mercy set forth by St. Mary’s Hospital and the leadership of the Sisters of Mercy, by providing primary care to anyone without health insurance free of charge. No patient will pay a dime for services in our care, truly life-saving news. We started with 1 clinic site in 2014 and have grown to 10 locations across 7 counties throughout East Tennessee!

It was at the petition of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine that the Sisters of Mercy established St. Mary’s Hospital in 1930. A plea for the great need for quality medical care that unfortunately still exists to this day. The communities that we serve face barriers including higher rates of poverty and chronic disease and fewer providers available for care. Barriers to health are often multipliers, creating hardships that are difficult to overcome on one's own.

Here is just one example of the types of crisis our patients face: a 23-year-old patient with Type 1 Diabetes came to us in severe Diabetic Ketoacidosis. She had to be taken by ambulance to the ER and had a prolonged ICU stay for treatment. She had moved from out of state, lost her Medicaid coverage, and ran out of insulin. We were able to send her home with free insulin from our Clinic, and our team worked with her to get coverage for her medication. She had issues with highs and lows on basal/bolus insulin, so we did some investigation and were able to help her sign up for a prescription assistance program for an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor. She is now doing very well, enjoying her 20s and out of danger thanks to the hard work of our team!

SMLC’s mission is to break these cycles of chronic crisis for our patients by removing income as a barrier to receiving medical care. Patients come to the clinic seeking medical assistance, but leave with so much more. Under the leadership of the religious Sisters of Mercy, and through staff and volunteers, patients see that they are loved, and worthy of love through Jesus Christ.
