At The Lord’s Diner, we believe no one should go hungry. Every day of the year, our community-operated kitchen provides a hot, nutritious evening meal to anyone in need—no questions asked. Since opening in February 2002, we’ve served nearly 9 million meals to people experiencing homelessness, unemployment, and underemployment in our community.
Over the past 25 years, we’ve grown to meet that need, expanding to two fixed sites, three mobile food trucks, daily outreach, a weekend backpack program, a facility in Pittsburg, and partnerships with the Oaklawn Activity Center and Second Light.
Today, the need is greater than ever. USDA commodity-food shipments once provided staples that made up 25% of the meals we served. After becoming increasingly sporadic, those shipments stopped altogether in July, with no clear indication of when they may resume.
Meanwhile, more people are turning to The Lord’s Diner for help. Four years ago, we served an average of 35,000 meals each month. In August, we served more than 53,000.
For some guests, the meal they receive from The Lord’s Diner is their only meal of the day—and for many, their healthiest. As we work to secure new sources of food and funding, our commitment remains the same: to provide a well-balanced, nutritious meal every night to everyone who needs one.
This Giving Tuesday, we’re asking for your support. Your generosity helps ensure that when someone in our community comes to The Lord’s Diner hungry, there will be a nutritious meal waiting.
Together, we can make sure no one in our community has to go hungry.
