The only historically black and Catholic university in the U.S. and

the only university founded by a Catholic Saint, Saint Katharine Drexel

Xavier University of Louisiana

Xavier University of Louisiana was founded in New Orleans in 1925 by St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament with the initial mission to offer higher education to Black youth who were then denied admission to area colleges and universities due to segregation. Xavier University's mission is to create a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society. This preparation takes place in a diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service.

One hundred years later, Xavier University of Louisiana has remained focused on its mission while maintaining its unique place in the world of higher education. Whether it is through musical song, liturgical dance, or prayer at daily Mass in the St. Katharine Drexel Chapel, spiritual growth remains at the heart of our educational mission.  Our student-initiated food pantry, Vincent's Vault, helps those within the community dealing with  food insecurity. Mission trips offer our Catholic Relief Services Student Ambassadors help to bring global challenges into focus. Xavier University's Institute of Black Catholic Studies offers graduate religious education and summer institutes for religious and laity.  Your gift to Xavier University of Louisiana will help fund these faith-based initiatives and programs and much more.

As the nation's only historically Black and Catholic university, Xavier University of Louisiana is a repository of one of the largest collections of writings and papers of Black Catholic religious and lay leaders and serves as an essential resource for researchers from around the country conducting research on Blacks and Catholicism.

Our students not only soar to higher levels of academic excellence, but after graduation serve as global and community leaders. Among our many accolades:

  • In a survey of students conducted for The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings, based on students’ opinions on how well their college or university is preparing them for their career, Xavier received the highest score of any of the more than 1,000 schools that were included in the rankings.

  • Xavier has ranked first nationally in the number of African American students earning undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and the Physical Sciences overall, and in the top five in Biology, and in the number of African American undergraduates who go on to complete medical school.

  • Among the nation's top four colleges of pharmacy for graduating African Americans with Doctor of Pharmacy degrees.
  • Ranked #3 in the nation in the number of African American graduates who go on to earn a Ph.D. in science and engineering disciplines.

The faith that compels your gift is an inspiration to us all.

Thank you for sharing your blessings.
