Honoring a Legacy of Love, Leadership, and Inclusion

Currently, approximately 14 percent of Little Flower families require tuition assistance. Without sustained funding, these families face difficult choices—choices that could mean sacrificing the faith-based education they deeply desire for their children.

In 2025, Little Flower Catholic School launched the LFS Legacy Scholarship Program, a scholarship dedicated to prominent supporters of, and witnesses to Christ, that helped shape LFS into what it is today.  Little Flower's inaugural LFS Legacy Scholarship honoree for 2025 is Ms. Karen Barreras. 

In Memoriam:  Karen Barreras dedicated nearly three decades of her life to Catholic education. Her greatest reward was always seeing her students thrive and grow into confident, compassionate, and faithful individuals. Her leadership was characterized by a genuine love for each student, a steadfast belief in Catholic values, and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

From 2022-2024, Karen served as the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) Director of Leadership Engagement. Prior to joining NCEA, she passionately served as Superintendent in the Diocese of Reno, Principal of Little Flower Catholic School (LFS), and Director of a large sliding-fee scale child care/kindergarten operated under Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. 

As Principal of LFS, Karen led with grace, grit, and an unshakable commitment to inclusion, diversity, and accessibility.  Her impact extended far beyond the school walls.  Ms. Barreras always kept the mission of Catholic education at the heart of her work.

This initiative is more than a tribute—it’s a call to action. It recognizes those who, like Karen, believe in the transformative power of Catholic education and are willing to stand up for those who need it most.
