Saint John the Evangelist Church located in Waynesboro Virginia is in the second year of a four-year fundraising campaign to build a new Parish Family Center. The proposed construction project will provide needed space for classrooms, offices, a community hall and kitchen and meeting rooms.
Several years ago the former church building, located in the downtown area, was sold so that a new larger church to fit the growing Catholic Community could be built on a 17-acre campus. Unfortunately, the cost of construction exceeded expectations which resulted in Phase II of the construction being postponed. The parish has already raised $1.2M toward the goal of $4M needed to start construction of the Parish Family Center.
Construction of the Parish Family Center is expected to be a transitional event so as to provide needed class room space for teaching the youth of the parish as well as strengthening the faith of the Catholic adult community.
The Saint John the Evangelist parish sponsors several community outreach programs that include: Disciples Kitchen which provides meals to the elderly and the local unhoused population, the WARM Shelter (WARM organizes a cold weather shelter as well as transitional housing and outreach programs), one of the local food pantries, a Catholic Parish in Haiti and the Waynesboro HERO program which provides temporary utility bill payment assistance to families experiencing unexpected financial set-backs.
The planned Parish Family Center is expected to be 11,000 square feet. The overall cost of construction is projected to be $5M. Once $4M is on hand and deposited in the bank then the architectural drawings will be completed and contractor bids will be solicited. The financial resources of the local Catholic Community are somewhat limited; hence we have initiated a nationwide solicitation for donations via the "Give Catholic Organization"
