In 2027, St. Augustine Cathedral will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the installation of our treasured Nichols & Simpson organ. For nearly a quarter of a century, this magnificent instrument has lifted our hearts and minds to God, filling our sacred liturgies with beauty, reverence, and awe. From the solemn strains of Holy Week to the triumphant hymns of Easter, from weddings and ordinations to funerals and daily Mass, the organ has been the enduring voice of prayer and praise for our parish family.
Over time, however, the organ has begun to show the wear of many years of faithful service. To continue its vital role in our worship, the instrument now requires significant repair, updating, and improvements. These efforts will ensure that future generations experience the fullness of sacred music in its rightful place; supporting the sung prayer of the Church and drawing souls closer to the mystery of God.
The Importance of Sacred Music
The Second Vatican Council reminds us that “the musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 112). Sacred music is not mere ornament, but an integral part of the liturgy itself. The organ, in particular, is singled out by the Church as the instrument most capable of elevating the prayer of the faithful, because it expresses both the majesty and tenderness of God’s presence.
Through sacred song, hearts are softened, faith is deepened, and our worship is carried beyond words into the eternal mystery of heaven. The repair and renewal of our cathedral organ is not simply a matter of maintaining an instrument—it is a work of love for God and His people, ensuring that the song of the Church will continue to inspire faith for generations to come.
